Merit Badges

The Troop is currently offering several Merit Badges, including some Eagle required Merit Badges. In addition, several other Merit Badges will be offered if we gather enough participants. If you are interested in attending classes, please contact the specific counselor or the Troop Merit Badge coordinators, Kris DeLay or Maureen McKeown. For your convenience, links to the requirements have been included in the Merit Badge columns.

Frank Bigelow has arranged a one day trip November 9th on the Middlebank II party boat for those interested in their fishing merit badge or just a fun day.  It leaves from Captain’s Cove Seaport located on Black Rock Harbor.  Parents of Scouts are welcome.  Here is the schedule:

  • Meet at Norfield Church at 5:45am
  • Arrive Captain’s Cove Seaport at 6:30am
  • Depart 7:00am from dock (we are not the only ones on the boat so no stragglers!)
  • Return 3:00pm to dock
  • Return to Norfield Church 3:45pm
  • We will need parents to help out with driving if we have more than 8 Scouts.  Bruce Koffsky and Rick Phillips may be available to help drive. Let me know if anyone else can help out.

Important notes:

  • Bait and tackle are included, bring your rod if you want but not necessary
  • $40 per Scout under 12, $60 for adults
  • Bring a light lunch
  • Boat has a cabin, but we need to dress warmly for that time of year, layers and windbreakers a must, rain gear possibly as well. Check the weather but it will always be colder on the boat.  Remember…stay dry and warm!
  • Prior to the trip we will have a quick meeting before or after a Troop meeting to go over final plans and provide some handouts.

Earning Merit Badges with Troop 788
There are four ways to earn Merit Badges:

1. Initiate the process and complete the requirements as an individual Scout.

2. Meet the requirements as part of a Troop Merit Badge project.

3. Attend Merit Badge College (for First Class Scouts) and Merit Badge weekends (for Scouts at least 14 years old).

4. Complete the Merit Badge requirements at summer camp.

The process for earning Merit Badges during the year is as follows:

1. A Scout identifies a Merit Badge in which he is interested.
2. The Scout talks to the Committee member responsible for advancement, who then identifies a Merit Badge Counselor who is authorized by the Council to supervise the Scout’s skill development. The Scout and the Committee member also seek other Scouts who may have a similar interest and could join the first Scout. The Committee member provides the Scout with a Merit Badge application (the blue card), which the Scoutmaster signs, indicating that the Scout is approved for earning this particular Merit Badge.
3. The Scout contacts the Merit Badge Counselor to review the expectations of the Counselor and to set up a meeting time.
4. The Scout meets with the Merit Badge Counselor as often as necessary to complete the Merit Badge requirements. Another Scout or parent must be present at all times. Scout youth protection guidelines prohibit any unsupervised adult-youth activities between individuals who are not related.
5. As the Scout meets the requirements of the Merit Badge, the Counselor indicates which requirements have been met by initialing the blue card. When all the requirements are met, the Counselor signs the blue card
6. The Scout returns the completed blue card to the member of the Advancement Committee. After the blue card is processed, the Scout’s part of the card will be returned to the Scout as a permanent record.

At summer camp, at the special February Merit Badge College and at special Merit Badge weekends, the same process is followed, except that the Scout Council, the organization that operates the camp or college program, provides the Counselors.

For record keeping purposes, the Scout must keep blue card receipts until he reaches the Eagle Scout rank. The Council’s Eagle Scout Review Committee will audit the Merit Badges and rank advancement. Any missing or incomplete information will derail your son’s advancement. Please keep accurate records!

Three merit badges will be coordinated through the Troop. Likely badges offered for 2007-8 will include First Aid, Communications and a third badge.  These Eagle Badges Are For 7th Grade and above.
