There are four ways to earn Merit Badges:
1. Initiate the process and complete the requirements as an individual Scout.
2. Meet the requirements as part of a Troop Merit Badge project.
3. Attend Merit Badge College (for First Class Scouts) and Merit Badge weekends (for Scouts at least 14 years old).
4. Complete the Merit Badge requirements at summer camp.
The process for earning Merit Badges during the year is as follows:
1. A Scout identifies a Merit Badge in which he is interested.
2. The Scout talks to the Committee member responsible for advancement, who then identifies a Merit Badge Counselor who is authorized by the Council to supervise the Scout’s skill development. The Scout and the Committee member also seek other Scouts who may have a similar interest and could join the first Scout. The Committee member provides the Scout with a Merit Badge application (the blue card), which the Scoutmaster signs, indicating that the Scout is approved for earning this particular Merit Badge.
3. The Scout contacts the Merit Badge Counselor to review the expectations of the Counselor and to set up a meeting time.
4. The Scout meets with the Merit Badge Counselor as often as necessary to complete the Merit Badge requirements. Another Scout or parent must be present at all times. Scout youth protection guidelines prohibit any unsupervised adult-youth activities between individuals who are not related.
5. As the Scout meets the requirements of the Merit Badge, the Counselor indicates which requirements have been met by initialing the blue card. When all the requirements are met, the Counselor signs the blue card
6. The Scout returns the completed blue card to the member of the Advancement Committee. After the blue card is processed, the Scout’s part of the card will be returned to the Scout as a permanent record.
At summer camp, at the special February Merit Badge College and at special Merit Badge weekends, the same process is followed, except that the Scout Council, the organization that operates the camp or college program, provides the Counselors.
For record keeping purposes, the Scout must keep blue card receipts until he reaches the Eagle Scout rank. The Council’s Eagle Scout Review Committee will audit the Merit Badges and rank advancement. Any missing or incomplete information will derail your son’s advancement. Please keep accurate records!
